The project is located in the core residential area of Beijing’s CBD. The site is a semi-underground space. The east and west sides of the project are narrow and long sunken courtyards. There is a skylight on the north side and the middle. Therefore, light and nature cannot penetrate into the room ,the space is closed and dim.
In the refurbishment design of the entire gym, we hope to use this project to try to explore how to create a community place that allows residents to perceive light and nature in a high-density modern city and fast-paced modern life.
For the dark semi-underground space, our strategy is to break the sense of closure of the current space. Let light and nature penetrate into the space.
Therefore, in the design, as many non-load-bearing walls as possible should be removed to minimize the boundary between indoor and outdoor. The space is divided and defined by metal grid and transparent glass.
On the ceiling, the lighting, air conditioning, fresh air and other equipment required by the gym are also cleverly hidden under the metal grid. The artificial light source illuminates the entire space evenly through the gaps of the metal grid. The floor adopts grey woven carpet floor to maximize the popularity and comfort of the space. Natural and artificial light sources permeate each other, and the collision of materials and textures make the enclosed space be more brightly.
Although the project is a renovation project, we believe that this is a deeper exploration of community public spaces, exploration of people and nature, exploration of materials and textures, and the spatial relationship between inside and outside. At least in a subtle way, this attitude has produced a small boost to the experience of modern community space. We hope that this city will have more and more similar projects. As an independent point, they are gradually expanded into the network to improve the quality of urban life as a whole.
