Qi Kang, formerly known as Qi Yukang, was born in Tiantai, Zhejiang province and Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. He was born in Nanjing on October 28, 1931. He is an architect, architectural educator and a member (Academician) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.


Qi Kang graduated from Nanjing Jinling Middle School in July 1949; graduated from the Department of Architecture, Nanjing University in 1952. After the adjustment, he successively served as lecturer, associate professor, professor and vice president of Nanjing Institute of Technology (later renamed Southeast University). He was elected member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Academician) in 1993. Since 1995, he has served as a member of the Academic Degrees Committee of The State Council of China. In 1997, he was elected as a foreign academician of the French Academy of Architectural Sciences. In 2001, he was selected as the first "Liang Sicheng Architecture Award", the highest award in China's architecture field.Qi kang has long been engaged in scientific research, design and teaching in the field of architecture and urban planning. He was the first to participate in the research of urbanization in developed areas of China and related research on urbanization and urban systems.


In view of the selection criteria of the IAI Life Achievement Award, Professor Qi Kang was listed as the final candidate for his outstanding achievements and contributions in the field of architecture and urban planning. On December 15, 2017, the 10th IAI Global Design Award ceremony was held in Shanghai. Professor Qi Kang was unable to attend the ceremony due to physical reasons. He appointed his student representatives to accept the 2016/2017 IAI Life Achievement Award on his behalf, and recorded his acceptance speech for the award. Professor Qi Kang became the fourth recipient of the IAI Life Achievement Award after Zaha Hadid.
